The Metaverse cannot be described as just one space or one place. Rather, it is a collection of different immersive environments from which the user can interact and experience.
One can be anywhere in the world and touch another person by simply entering into their dreams or video games. It could be regarded as virtual reality for the internet age, but it has been at this point for quite some time now with many companies working on their own versions of this platform.
The Metaverse is essentially a platform that can be used to create any type of media that the user needs. The space itself can be made from any type of technology, including physical objects (such as real-life), mixed reality 3D, holograms, virtual objects/characters and more. This could also include non-immersive spaces such as walkthroughs, dioramas and even physical environments. It can also be used for non-virtual reality medical clinics. The possibilities are endless.
There is no one way to approach the Metaverse and its many layers. Some may want to play games, some may want to create them, and others may just want to hang out with their friends. For the sake of this article, we will cover the basics of investing in virtual objects as well as look at five companies that are currently creating an easily accessible platform for us to use in our day-to-day lives.
Ways to Invest in the Metaverse
1. Investing in virtual objects
One of the best ways to invest in the Metaverse is by purchasing a software application that allows you to create objects and/or interact with them. This software can then be purchased by other users or even investors and you receive a portion of the income generated from their creations. You are essentially trading your creativity for other users, much like an artist selling their art or a musician selling their songs. Each type of object can be sold for a profit or loss depending on the user’s experience.
2. Creating objects
Users can sell any kind of virtual object they want if it is a picture, video, sound or even another form of media. The Metaverse is designed to be a sharing platform but with some sort of payment system that regulates the way that users can create and monetize their own content. While this will be available in the future, there are plenty of alternative applications to getting around it. For example, you can use a custom application to create a virtual video game or place and then add the source code to your Github repository. From there other users can clone your work and create their own version of the game while paying you a portion of their income.
3. Investing in the Metaverse like an IPO
This is probably one of the riskiest options available but it also has the highest payoff. The Metaverse will be available to anyone eventually but you can invest in some companies that are already developing the platform. This is not a direct investment as you do not own any part of the company but rather a form of limited partnership through purchasing stocks or bonds. You can also invest in Metaverse related startups or projects and benefit from their success, much like Tesla’s IPO back in 2010.
4. Investing in VR headsets
VR headsets have been around for quite some time, even before the modern Metaverse began to take shape. There are a number of headsets on the market and all vary in quality, price and performance. They are, however, still relatively new to the public when it comes to purchasing them. Displays of different sizes to accommodate any kind of head-sized can be found on Amazon for as low as $15 for a basic VR headset with larger features coming at even higher prices.
Companies such as HTC, Oculus and Sony know that these devices need to be affordable so that users will not only want to purchase them but also utilize them frequently. This is why they are making their headsets less expensive, but at a cheaper price than the consumer wants in order to create profit.
5. Investing in Augmented Reality Glasses (AR)
Augmented Reality (AR) glasses have only recently begun to take off and have experienced the biggest growth when it comes to the Metaverse. These devices can be used to create any type of experience a developer could imagine, but they are extremely expensive. These headsets can range anywhere from $5,000 all the way up to $3,000,000.
Luckily, this is not the only way to access AR. There are plenty of other companies that allow users to create their own AR games with their current smartphones and tablets. These headsets can be incredibly useful but they also come with a hefty price tag.
Investing in the Metaverse is a relatively new concept, especially when considering how much potential it has. We are only just now beginning to scratch the surface of what the Metaverse can do and there is still so much more to come. It will likely take years for us to see its true potential but the Metaverse is perfect for anyone who wants to create their own VR game or even their own TV show.
The Metaverse is not VR, it’s not AR and it’s not Mixed Reality, it’s the next step in how we experience media. Sometimes using technology to replicate our daily lives can be a secret desire for many of us but we don’t yet have the technology to do so. The Metaverses will provide us with ways to make our voice heard and also fulfil fantasies that may or may not have existed before virtual reality was introduced.
